Meanings and examples

When used in singular. Note: this usage may be uncommon today, where the affix seems to be used only in plural in the sense of 'crowd', but the singular usage is mentioned in Schultz-Lorentzen (1958), although he does not give an example.

Or 'flock' or 'many' etc. This is the most common usage, and given this meaning it is always used with plural endings.

  • anguterpaat, a crowd of men
    [4]

From {aŋutə}N, 'man'. The ending is absolutive plural N{-it}.

  • tuttorpaat, a flock of caribou
    [8]

From tuttu, 'caribou'. This is a vowel stem, so the epenthetic /q/ is injected.
