Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This affix is non-productive or only marginally productive nowadays, but it is found in a number of lexicalised words. The meaning is 'become (more) Vb'ing', with adjectival stems. According to Schultz-Lorentzen (1958), this affix is only used with verb stems indicating size/measurements. Thus, it will normally only be used in a monovalent sense, i.e. with intransitive form. However, there is an example, allivaa, where it seemingly increases the valency of the stem (in the sense of 'make it'). However, this behaviour is not regular.
Left sandhi:
The affix seems to be regularly additive, with the possibility of eliding a /ə/. However, there are a few (lexicalised) examples with original t-stems, where it seems to have been truncative. However, this behaviour does not seem to be regular nowadays.
Meanings and examples
Only with stems indicating size/measurement; hence Subject
will almost always be the Actor
.
- amilivoq, it becomes thin(er)/slim(er)
[4]
From {amit}V, 'is thin/slim'. This lexicalised example is irregularly formed with deletion of /t/.
- allivoq, it becomes big(ger)
[4]
From {aŋə}V, 'is big' with elision of /ə/ (old ortho. agdlivoĸ). The 'regular' form angilivoq without ə-elision is also possible.
- allivara, I have made it bigger
[4]
From {aŋə}V with ə-elision. Here the affix is seemingly valency-increasing. However, this behaviour is not regular nowadays.
- kigaallivoq, it slows down
[4]
From {kəgait}V, 'is slow'. Note that this too is a t-stem, but here /t/ is not removed.
- millivoq, it becomes small(er)
[4]
From {mikə}V, 'is small' with elision of /ə/ (old ortho. migdlivoĸ). The 'regular' form mikilivoq without ə-elision is also possible.
- pukkilivoq, it has become lower
[4]
With preceding N{-kit}V. This lexicalised example is irregularly formed with deletion of /t/. See N{-kitli}V for the modern, regular combination.
