Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This enclitic has two meanings:
- The general meaning is 'but', and in this usage it is synonymous the particle {kəsiatni}.
- With time expressions (denoting past), the enclitic denotes something like 'already' or 'ever since then', i.e. it is used to emphasise the remoteness of the past event.
Meanings and examples
This meaning is synonymous with the particle {kəsiatni}.
- Kaali maaniippoq Piitarli maaniinngilaq, Kaali is here but Piitaq is not here
When used on words describing the past. It may also just emphasise the remoteness of the past event even more.
- Qangarsuarli, A very long time ago
From {qaŋa}, 'long ago' and with N{(q)cuaq}N, here added as an enclitic denoting 'emphasis'.
- Qangalimmi takuvugut!, It is long indeed since we saw each other!
- Qangali pujortartalerpit? 1985-imili., How long ago (i.e. since when) did you start to smoke? Since 1985.
