Form and usage:

The meaning of this morpheme is 'Vb'er (of something)', i.e. it denotes the Agent of a transitive verb. Hence, the resulting noun is sometimes called the active participle or agent participle of the stem, although that terminology is not used in the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary [MFSJLK10].

The authors remark that the alternations between the two forms (with /ð/ following a vowel, and /t/ following a consonant) likely already existed in PE. The same alternation, with /ð/ becoming /z/, /j/ or /c/ following a vowel, also exists in all the daughter languages in the Inuit branch (but seemingly not in the Yupik branch, according to [MFSJLK10]).
