According to [MFSJLK10], the meaning of this morpheme is 'get', likely mainly with nominal stems, although they also mention cases where it appears to have been attached to verbal bases, seemingly in the sense of 'begin to'.
These authors also believe that the secondary form {ŋ(ə)} has developed from the main form {nəg} already in PE.
