Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

The meaning of this affix is 'a story of N' or 'an account of N'. The affix is a combination of N{-liqcaaq}V, 'tell about N' and V{-(cc)utə}N, 'tool/means to Vb'. In this combination, V{-(cc)utə}N has attached to the final /q/, rather than removing it and injecting /cc/, as it sometimes may do. This combination seemingly only appears in Schultz-Lorentzen (1958), whereas most other dictionaries, including the newer ones, appear to prefer a nominalisation with the abstract participle V{nəq}N instead; i..e. N{-liqcaaqnəq}N, so see that combination for further examples.

Left sandhi:

Left sandhi is inherited from the left-most component, N{-liqcaaq}V. See this for details.

Meanings and examples

  • avanngarnisalersaarutit, stories about (the people of) Cape York
    [4]

From avanngarnisaq, 'man from the northern(most) parts'. It is thus not necessarily Cape York, but just somewhere far north. However, this is the translation Schultz-Lorentzen (1958) gives.
