Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
The meaning of this affix is 'real N'. It also has a verbal variant, V{-vik}V with a related meaning.
Left sandhi:
The affix is normally truncative nowadays. However, in a few lexicalised cases, it appears to have been added additively to the preceding stem instead, thus behaving as N{vik}N instead. This is seen in e.g.
- talerpik, 'right' (opposite of 'left'), from taleq, 'arm', so literally 'the right arm'.
- imarpik, 'the real ocean; the great ocean', from imaq, 'ocean'.
However, these cases are all lexicalised, so we shall not attempt to account for these few special cases in the morphemic form recorded here.
