Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This affix is a combination of habitual V{ðarə}V and the negation affix V{ŋŋit}V, which is the only affix that can follow V{ðarə}V. However, due to the highly irregular behaviour of V{ðarə}V, which involves suppletion from morphemes {ɣai-} and {aʀ-}, this combination can result in some forms, that are barely recognisable as deriving from V{ðarə}V. Thus, we record it here separately.
Left sandhi:
According to Kleinschmidt [9], there are three possibilities for this combination:
- /ðarəŋŋit/, which is the completely regular combination, e.g. oqartarinngilaq (old orthography: oĸartaríngilaĸ) from oqarpoq.
- /garaiŋŋit/, which seems to be formed with suppletion from {ɣai-}, e.g. oqararaanngilaq (old orthography: oĸararáingilaĸ). Presumably, this form would also alternate with initial /ð/ according to the left-sandhi rules of V{ðarə}V, so we could also have /ðaraiŋŋit/.
- /gaiŋŋit/, which is only using the suppletive form from {ɣai-}, i.e. V{gai}V. According to Kleinschmidt, this form will often be used, if the stem ends in 'ar', i.e. /aq/ in our notation. Thus for example oqaraanngilaq (old orthography: oĸaráingilaĸ).
Right sandhi:
Right sandhi is inherited from the right-most component, V{ŋŋit}V. See this for details.
Inflection sandhi:
Inflection sandhi is inherited from the right-most component, V{ŋŋit}V. See this for details.
Meanings and examples
- oqartarinngilaq; oqaraanngilaq, he does not usually say anything
