Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This is a non-productive affix found in a few lexicalised words. The meaning is unclear, but it seems to be something like 'Subject is still/continuously Vb'ing'. It might also be translated as 'is Vb-full' or 'is Vb-tive', i.e. it signifies that the Subject is continuously Vb'ing, as a characteristic behaviour.

Note that this affix is spelt -gtarpoĸ in the old orthography, but according to the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary, its historic, reconstructed form is {t(t)aʀ-}, thus indicating that the initial consonant is /t/ rather than a velar (i.e. /g/ or /k/). This has no practical significance, but for the sake of consistency, we follow the reconstruction from the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary and thus give the form as V{(t)taq}V.

Meanings and examples

Tentative, since there are not many examples.

  • naakkittarpoq, he is merciful
    [4]

From naakkigaa, 'he pities him', apparently without the final {gə} morpheme.

  • misigittarpoq, he is sensitive
    [4]

From misigaa, 'he feels it' (in the sense of: experiencing emotions).

  • kamagittarpoq, he is patient/tolerant/indulgent; he is slow to anger
    [6]

From kamagaa, 'he shows tolerance of it', or 'he puts up with it'.
