Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
The meaning of this affix is something like 'Subject
Vb incompletely', i.e. indicating some form of incomplete motion.
This can also mean that the action appears clumsy or ineffective or in some other way incorrect (compared to the customary/optimal way of performing the action).
It is a seemingly non-productive affix mentioned only in Ordbogeeraq [11] and Schultz-Lorentzen's dictionary [10] . These dictionaries do not mention any restrictions on its usage, but all the examples in Ordbogeeraq and Schultz-Lorentzen appear to be k-stems. For example, the examples in Ordbogeeraq are
- pilakatârpoĸ, pulakatârpoĸ, sinikatârpoĸ, unikatârpoĸ
from the stems
- pilagpoĸ-, pula-?, sinigpoĸ-, unigpoĸ
of which at least three of the four are k-stems (and the fourth is unidentified). This may indicate that the affix is only used on old k-stems, similar to the affix ??.
Left sandhi:
The affix is possibly only used on k-stems.
Meanings and examples
I.e., indicating some form of incomplete motion.
- arpakataarpoq, he runs clumsily
[10]
From arpappoq, old orthography: arpagpoĸ, 'he runs'. The affix seems to indicate that the legs move in an incomplete was (compared to an optimal way of running), thus making it appear clumsy.
- pilakataarpaa, he cuts pieces off it (a sea animal)
[10]
From pilappoq, old orthography: pilagpoĸ, 'he flenses' (some sea animal). The affix seams to indicate that he is making small, or uncoordinated, and thus ineffective, cuts.
