Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This is a non-productive or only marginally productive affix. It does not appear in Oqaatsit [19], possibly because it, due to the new orthography, has become indistinguishable from a different affix, V{ssaiq}V, with an entirely different meaning.

According to Kleinschmidt [13], the meaning of the present affix is: 'Subject Vb to/in a particularly high degree'. It is mainly used with the verbal comparative/superlative affix V{nəru}V to further emphasise the superlative meaning; or, according to Kleinschmidt [13], in combination with N{-qaq}V and followed by V{ŋŋit}V, although he only gives a single example of this.

Meanings and examples

  • annerussaartoq, the greatest [13]

Or maybe even: 'the greatest of the greatest'.

  • qutsinnerussaartoq, the highest [13]

Or maybe even: 'the highest of the highest'.

  • silaqassaanngillat, they are not particularly intelligent; they behave stupidly [13]

This is from an expression, silaqanngitsoq, 'someone who is stupid; unintelligent'.
