Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This is a non-productive morpheme found in some lexicalised constructions. It is only used with verb stems for winds to express 'it blows strongly from'. These verbs often seem to have been built with a morpheme N{saq}V, where N indicates the direction from which the wind is coming; see also N{saqnəq}N. The present affix seems to be used similarly, just replacing V{nəq}N in the aforementioned construction.
Meanings and examples
Only with verbs denoting 'it (the wind) blows from N'.
- assarnaarpoq, there blows a strong wind from East
[11]
Compare assarneq, 'a wind from the east'.
- avannaarpoq, there blows a strong wind from North
[11]
Surprisingly, there is no corresponding noun built with N{saqnəq}N.
- nunasarnaarpoq, there blows a strong wind out from the inland
[11]
Compare nunasarneq, 'a wind from the (direction of) the land'.
