Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This affix is a lexicalised combination of V{yuma}V (will/want to) and an old, non-productive morpheme V{-aq}V (repeated/prolonged activity). However, the meaning of this combination is not obvious from the meaning of the constituents. It denotes 'will eventually/sometimes Vb', i.e. it expresses vague future.
Left sandhi:
Left sandhi is inherited from the left-most component, V{yuma}V. See this for details.
Right sandhi:
Right sandhi is inherited from the right-most component, V{-aq}V. See this for details.
Inflection sandhi:
Inflection sandhi is inherited from the right-most component, V{-aq}V. See this for details.
Meanings and examples
Expresses vague future
- aallarumaarpoq, he will eventually leave/depart
- ornikkumaarpaa, he will eventually approach him
- tikikkumaarpoq, He will eventually arrive
- aqagu tigujumaarpara, I will take it tomorrow (at some point)
Perhaps more vague than using V{ssa}V, but the meaning does not seem very different.
- aajumaarpiuk?, Will you fetch it at some point?
