Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

The meaning of this stem is anorak (from which this word is also borrowed, cf. the old orthography spelling ánorâĸ), i.e. a traditional type of clothing/over-coat.

Some older sources [14, 18, 8] describe that this stem may optionally inflect with gemination of an unwritten consonant, which becomes [cc]. We record this unwritten, geminating consonant as (j) in the present, morphemic form. Note however that according to the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary [22], the reconstructed historical form is {atnuʀaaq}, so there is no historical indication/explanation of the source of this geminating consonant.

Inflection sandhi:

According to several sources [14, 18, 8], this stem displays irregular gemination of an unknown consonant in the stem, here indicated as (j), so /aa/ ⇒ /ajja/ ⇒ [acca]. However, according to Kleinschmidt [14] and Ordbogeeraq [18], it may alternatively also just decline like a weak q-stem without any gemination. We do not record this alternative declension here.
