Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

The meaning of this stem is 'soup' or 'broth'. According to Kleinschmidt [13] also e.g. aqerlup ajua, 'lead oxide', which forms on lead when it is smelted. This meaning seems to be metaphorical, since the literal meaning would be 'soup of lead'. Alternatively, the stem could be regarded as expressing 'that which is extracted through heating/boiling'. In any case, the only meaning in use today seems to be 'soup'.

Inflection sandhi:

This stem normally declines with gemination of /j/ ⇒ [tc]. However, according to Schultz-Lorentzen [8], it may alternatively also decline without gemination, i.e. as an ordinary weak q-stem. This is not indicated in the other dictionaries, though, and e.g. Ordbogeeraq [17] only marks the declension as geminating. Thus, we only record the declension with gemination here.
