Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

The meaning is 'Subject Vb clumsily', or 'awkwardly' or similar. See also the related nominal variant N{-kutlak}N.

This is a non-productive affix described by Schultz-Lorentzen [16] and in Ordbogeeraq [17], but not elsewhere. Hence, we have no clear information of any underlying phonemes. However, in the old orthography, this affix was spelt -kutdlagpoĸ in both of the aforementioned dictionaries, thus indicating that the assimilated consonant is a /t/.

On the other hand, Kleinschmidt [13] mentions an independent nominal base, kugdlak, which also means 'clumsy'. This could indicate that the origin of the present affix in fact is a separate base, and that the underlying consonant in fact is a velar. However, neither of these dictionaries describe such a relation, and this stem is not described in the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary either. Thus, in this case, we shall rely on the old orthography and write the assimilated consonant phoneme as /t/.
