Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This is a non-productive affix mentioned in older dictionaries, but not in Ordbogeeraq [12] or Oqaatsit [14]. However, it is found in some lexicalised words.

According to Kleinschmidt [9], the affix seems to indicate that the action described by the verbal stem is somehow broken off, without being completed. This is difficult to translate in isolation, since it will depend on the meaning of the stem. Here, we shall define it as 'Subject Vb incompletely', but this should only be regarded as a tentative translation.

This is a tentative translation. The exact translation will depend on the meaning of the stem.

  • peqqissimivoq, he regrets; repents [9]

    From peqqissivoq, 'he does better than before'.

  • anersaamivoq, he sighs [9]

    From anersaarpoq, 'he breathes; draws his breath'.

  • peqimivoq, it appears briefly [9]

    Of a seal, that comes up to the surface and then immediately dives down again without arching its back. From peqippoq, 'it bends over; arches its back'.
