Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This stem has two meanings: 'arctic cod' and '(immature) trout'. It is derived from an old combination of {iqaluk}N, 'arctic char' or '(adult) trout', and the morpheme N{-aq}N, which denotes 'something resembling N' or 'young of N'. Thus, the two meanings of the present stem derive from two pairings of the four possible combinations of meanings.
Note that the stem is irregularly formed, where N{-aq}N has attached directly to the stem-final /k/ of {iqaluk}N, thereby weakening it to /g/, rather than removing it entirely. In the old orthography, e.g. Kleinschmidt [10], this stem was most commonly spelt eĸaluvaĸ, i.e. with a /v/ instead of /g/, but nowadays the form with /g/ is most common.
Inflection sandhi:
The stem has regular gemination of /g/ to [kk]. Even in the old orthography, where this was spelt _eĸaluvaĸ__, the stem still had gemination of this /v/ to [kk], spelt 'vk', thus revealing that this phoneme in fact is a /g/. This pattern was apparently standard for stems ending in -vaĸ, according to Schultz-Lorentzen [5].
