Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

The meaning of this affix is 'a bought/found/encountered N'. It is an old combination of N{si}V, 'acquire/encounter N' and the passive participle V{-ðaq}N. The incorporated N of N{si}V here appears to be equated with a Patient role, despite the fact that the affix is normally used with intransitive endings, and it is this Patient role that the resulting 'passivised' noun refers to.

Note that it appears that this combination is formed with the variant {-aq}, i.e. without the initial /ð/, rather than N{-lijaq}N, where the /j/ is a reflex of /ð/, that sometimes may resurface through gemination. This does not appear to be the case with the present combination, neither when the affix is used productively, nor in lexicalised combinations containing this affix. Thus we do not record it as /sijaq/.
