Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This is a non-productive affix found in some lexicalised constructions; most notably N{suknit}V, which is still used productively. The meaning is 'smells like N' or 'tastes like N', and apparently also in some cases 'resembles N'.


Right sandhi:

This affix, and its derivates, are among the few remaining true t-stems, that still have 'ts' in the intransitive, participial mood, and in combination with the intransitive participle V{ðuq}N, according to the Oqaatsit dictionary [CBBJRPIKJR97].


Meanings and examples

  • qallunarnippoq, it smells/tastes foreign [JP67]

    Lexicalised, the base must be related to qallunaaq.

  • mikiarnippoq, it smells fermented/rotten [JP67]

    Lexicalised, from mikiaq, 'fermented meat'.
