Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

The meaning of this affix is 'have a tendency to Vb' or 'often/habitually Vb'. Hence, its meaning seems to be close to that of V{ðaq}V, which, however appears to be more commonly used.


Right sandhi:

This affix also has a nominal form, V{gajuuq}N, meaning 'one who often/habitually Vb', which is formed by adding the morpheme {-uq}. This seems to be preferred to using the standard intransitive participle formed with V{ðuq}N.

  • imerajuppoq, he is alcoholic [CWSL58]

    From imerpoq, 'he drinks', literally 'he has a habit/tendency to drink'. The nominal form is then imerajooq, 'an alcoholic'.

  • tillikkajuppoq, he is thieving; he steals whenever he has the chance [SK71]

    From tillippoq, 'he steals'. The nominal form is then 'tillikkajooq', 'someone who often steals'.

  • sallugajuppoq, he is lying [CBBJRPIKJR97]

    I.e., he is an untrustworthy person, a liar.

  • tusarajuppara, I have often heard it [SK71]

    From tusarpaa, 'he hears it'.

  • angugajooq, one who often catches seals [CBBJRPIKJR97]

    From anguvoq, 'he caught a seal'. This is the uq-participle form.

  • iluanaarajooq, one who is lucky [CBBJRPIKJR97]

    From iluanaarpoq, 'he is lucky'. This is the uq-participle form.
