Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This is a non-productive or only marginally productive affix denoting 'Subject takes a long time to Vb' or 'Subject hesitates to Vb'.
According to Kleinschmidt [SK71], V{yumaaqnəqtu}V is usually preferred in this sense.
Note that this affix is spelt -nasaerpoĸ in the old orthography, e.g. in Schultz-Lorentzen [CWSL58], as if it were derived by V{-iq}V. However, according to the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary [MFSJLK10], this is not the case; they instead relate it to a reconstructed historical form {naci(C)aʀ-} or {naca(C)aʀ-}. Likewise, it is also recorded as -nasârpoĸ in Ordbogeeraq [JP67]. Thus, we follow these two latter sources here and record its form as V{nasaaq}V here.
Meanings and examples
Or 'takes a long time to Vb'.
- iginnasaarpaa, he hesitates to throw it away
[SK71]
From igippaa, 'he throws it away'.
- pinasaanngilaq, he does not hesitate (to do something); he readily (does something)
[SK71]
From the dummy verb stem {pi}V, giving the pure meaning of the affix.
- ninngannasaarpoq, he is not quick to anger; he is not easily angered
[CWSL58]
From ninngappoq, 'he is angry; hysterical'.
