Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This stem is formed from {anəŋaaq}N + N{-ucaq}N, seemingly with drop of the final /aq/, or, alternatively from an unrecorded form {anəŋaq} (cf. {anəŋaaq}N). In either case, the literal meaning is 'something that looks like the Moon'.
However, the usual meaning is 'coin' in singular, and 'money' in plural. In the sense of 'money' it is not only used of coins nowadays, but also paper bills and even entirely digital currency.
In the newer dictionary Oqaatsit [CBBJRPIKJR97], there is also an entirely different meaning recorded: 'large-flowered wintergreen (Pyrola grandiflora)', i.e. a type of flower. This seems to be a newer name, maybe due to some resemblance between the flowers and coins (or moons).
Meanings and examples
The meaning 'coin' is singular. When used in plural, the meaning is 'money', nowadays also used for 'paper-money' and even entirely digital finances.
