According to Kleinschmidt [SK71], this stem denotes 'a type of small goblin or troll that hides in the ground'. According to the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary [MFSJLK10], it derives from {iðəʀ-}, 'to hide', but the nominalising affix, turning this into a noun stem, is unexplained.
