Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

According to Kleinschmidt [SK71], the meaning of this stem is 'food', but normally only used in the sense of 'meat'. According to the Comparative Eskimo DIctionary [MFSJLK10], there also seems to be a relation to the verbal stem {nərə}V, 'eat'.

Right sandhi:

Note that the final /ə/ normally takes the sound [a] when followed by a vowel, i.e. either a vowel-initial ending, or especially N{-utə}N.

Inflection

Inflection pattern:

Stem type: ə-stem
Inflection sandhi: Default/none, p-declined
Sources: [JP67], [SK71]

Notes on inflection:

The stem inflects as an ordinary vowel stem with p-declension. As this is entirely regular, we do not record a full inflection paradigm here. Note that with vowel-initial endings, the final /ə/ will take the sound [a], e.g. {nəqə}N + N{-a} ⇒ neqaa, 'its flesh'.
