Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This stem is a combination of {nərə}V, 'eat', and V{'-vik}N, the less productive variant of the 'place/time where' affix V{(v)vik}N, which often seems to be used to give a more specific meaning to the derived word. According to Kleinschmidt [SK71] the combination has several meanings:
- 'Place for eating', which is a general meaning. For humans, this could be a dinner table, and for cattle this could be a manger. There is no habitual affix, so it could also just refer to a place where an animal ate something (distinguished e.g. because there might be blood traces or remains of a carcass).
- 'Time when eating', which is a general meaning. Specifically in the case of humans, this could also mean 'dinner time'.
- 'Table', of any kind, not necessarily a dinner table. This meaning is an extension of the 'place for eating' meaning above, and it is also the only meaning that is listed in Oqaatsit [CBBJRPIKJR97] for this word, so it is likely the only one that is used productively.
From my personal observations, I have never seen or heard nerrivik used in any other sense than 'table', but I record the two other, more general meanings as well, since they might occur in older writings.
