Inflection

Inflection pattern:

Stem type: q-stem
Inflection sandhi: Weak stem, Irregular, p-declined
Sources: [JP67]

Stem before consonant Stem before vowel Notable forms
New orthography pingasu pingaju -, -, pingasut
Old orthography pingasu pingaju -, -, pingasut
Phonemic orthography piŋasu piŋaju -, -, piŋasut

Notes on inflection:

The stem inflects as a weak q-stem with p-declension. However, as the meaning is inherently plural, this stem is only used with plural endings.

The stem has a strange sound change, where /j/ ⇒ /s/ with consonant endings, but it remains being /j/ when a vowel-initial (i.e. possessive) ending is added. In practice, the stem therefore appears as pingasut, pingasunik, pingasunut and so on, but pingajuat. This looks like gemination, but it is unclear whether this in fact is the case, since the /s/ is not doubled. We therefore record it as just irregular here.
