Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
The meaning of ths stem is 'seal' (of any unspecified type). According to the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary [MFSJLK10], it is derived from {puə}V, 'to emerge/surface', likely because the seal sticks its head up from the water. The second part is unexplained, but we may speculate that it is the active participle V{ðə}N, such that the literal meaning is 'one that emerges' (for someone, probably the hunter).
Right sandhi:
It likely rarely happens that this stem is used with possessive endings, but there are a few cases where a vowel-initial affix is joined onto this stem, thereby revealing that the final vowel in fact is /ə/ and that it indeed alternates with [a] according to the usual ə-rule. Consider for example:
- {puəðə}N + N{-iq}V ⇒ puisaappoq, 'there are no seals'.
- {puəðə}N + N{-irut(ə)}V ⇒ puisaaruppoq, 'all the seals are gone'.
Inflection
Inflection pattern:
| Stem type: | ə-stem |
| Inflection sandhi: | Default/none, p-declined |
| Sources: | [JP67] |
Notes on inflection:
The stem inflects as an ordinary weak q-stem with p-declension. As this is entirely regular, we do not record a full inflection paradigm here.
