Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

The meaning of this stem is: 'Actor enters (into something@ALL)', or 'goes inside' or similar. According to Kleinschmidt [SK71], there is also a second meaning with transitive usage: 'Agent pulls Patient under water with it', seemingly only used with sea animals pulling something (e.g. hunting equipment) down with it. This second meaning is also mentioned in Oqaatsit [CBBJRPIKJR97], but here its usage is transitive. Thus, we record the stem as monovalent and divalent, and subjective and patientive.

According to the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary, the stem derives from a morpheme {itəʀ-}, where the /t/ at some point was assibilated to /s/ by the t-to-s rule.

Meanings and examples

The transitive usage is mentioned by Kleinschmidt, but in Oqaatsit it is only describes the usage as intransitive.
