Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This stem has two different meanings:
- According to Kleinschmidt [SK71] and Schultz-Lorentzen [CWSL58], the meaning is: '
Agentsends (something@INS) viaPatient', i.e.Agentgives thePatientsomething to bring along to someone else. Thus, in this usage thePatientis the courier. - In the newer dictionary Oqaatsit [CBBJRPIKJR97], the meaning is: '
AgentsendsPatient(something@INS)'. Thus, in this usage thePatientis the recipient.
According to the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary [MFSJLK10], it is probably related to {naŋsaq}V, possibly with V{tət}V added, and then with some kind of contraction. As this is speculative, we record the second component as unknown here.
Notable forms:
-
HTR:
{naŋsət}V + V{ði}V ⇒ /naŋsətci/
The HTR-form is mentioned in Kleinschmidt [SK71].
-
Passive participle:
{naŋsət}V + V{-ðaq}N ⇒ /naŋsətaq/
The passive participle is mentioned in Kleinschmidt [SK71]. He defines it as 'the one with which one sends something', i.e. the courier. In the modern usage of the word, it will likely instead denote 'the recipient'.
