According to [MFSJLK10], the meaning of this morpheme is/was 'secondary', likely primarily used with nominal stems. The authors suggest it may have been formed through some combination of +{ŋu}V and +{un}N, but how that should have given rise to the proposed form (or the suggested meaning) is entirely unclear. It may have been through a process similar to +{ucir}N, which they also believe is from +{un}N, by why they believe that, or what the transformational steps should have been, is not explained anywhere.
