Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This affix is a lexicalised combination of N{-liq}V, 'equip with N' and V{'-vik}N, 'place where', resulting in the meaning 'container for N'. Note that V{'-vik}N in this case has not caused gemination in N{-liq}V.
Left sandhi:
Left sandhi is inherited from the left-most component, N{-liq}V. See this for details.
Right sandhi:
Right sandhi is inherited from the right-most component, V{'-vik}N. See this for details.
Inflection sandhi:
Inflection sandhi is inherited from the right-most component, V{'-vik}N. See this for details.
Meanings and examples
Or 'place to keep/store N'
- kaagilivik, cookie jar
[8]
- meqqusivik, container for needles
[4]
From {miqqutə}N, 'needle', with replacivity causing /təl/ ⇒ /s/.
- aningaasivik, safe
I.e., for storing money, from {aniŋaucaq}N, 'coin'. Here we see the affix having removed the final /VC/ from the stem.
- qaannivik, kayak scaffold
From {qajaq}N, 'kayak'. The affix has removed the final /VC/ from the stem, which has triggered compensatory gemination. See the entry for qajaq for details on this highly irregular gemination pattern.
