Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

The meaning of this affix appears to be something like 'Actors all have each other as mutual N', according to the examples given in Oqaatsit [14]. Given this meaning, it is only used with endings in plural.

The affix appears to be composed of N{-giik}V, 'mutually have as N' and an unknown morpheme {-aaq}. The latter seems to make the present affix more inclusive, or denote a larger group.

The affix also has a nominal form, N{-giiaaq}N. See also the affix N{kkuutaaq}V, which seems to have a related meaning.

Meanings and examples

Only with plural endings.

  • angeqqatigiiaarput, they are ordered according to size [14]

Literally: 'they all have each other to one who is equally big'.

  • assigiiaarput, they are all alike; they are all equal [14]
  • illugiiaarput, they are ordered in pairs [14]

From a base {iŋluk}N, denoting 'the other of a pair'.

  • qaleriiaarput, they are layered (in layers) [14]

Lexicalised. The base is unclear, but possibly qaleq, 'decorative band'.

  • sanileriiaarput, they are ordered in a row [11]

From sanileq, 'neighbour', literally 'one placed to the side'. Hence literally: 'they all mutually have each other as one placed placed to the side (of the others)'.
