Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This affix is a straightforward combination of intransitive participle V{ðuq}N V{ðuq}N, future nominal N{kcaq}N, and N{-u}V, 'be'. According to Fortescue [13], this combination denotes 'Subject is supposed to Vb'. He also notes, that this can indicate a sense of 'planned future'.

See also the related affix V{-ðakcau}V, which is a similar combination, but with the passive participle V{ðuq}N instead of the intransitive participle.

Left sandhi:

Left sandhi is inherited from the left-most component, V{ðuq}N. See this for details.

Meanings and examples

This can also indicate a sense of 'planned future'.

  • Avannamut ingerlaqqittussaavunga, I was going to continue travelling North [2]

The relevant stem here is ingerlaqqik-, 'continue going'. The meaning here is 'planned future'.

  • Palasi Hansen Lars Tobiassenikkunni najugaqartussaavoq, uangalu ilinniartitsisukkunni Ole Larsenikkunni najugaqassaanga, Pastor Hansen was supposed to stay in Lars Tobiassen's house, and I should be in the teacher Ole Larsen's house. [2]

The relevant stem here is najugaqar-, 'be domiciled', here translated as 'stay in'.

  • Uummannap eqqaani angalasussaagaluarpunga umiarsuarmullu ilaallunga Upernavimmukarlunga, I was supposed to be travelling around the Uummannaq area, and going to Upernavik by ship [2]

The relevant stem here is angala-, 'travel around', and with V{galuaq}V. This affix modifies the meaning of 'supposed', indicating that this originally was the plan, but then something changed.

  • Ulloq taanna ualikkut helikopteri kujammut ingerlasussaavoq, qujanaqaarlu inissaqarmat., That day, in the afternoon, the helicopter was supposed to go south, and it thankfully had space on board (for a passenger) [11]

The relevant stem here is ingerla-, 'go'. The meaning here is again 'planned future' (i.e. according to the flight plan of the helicopter).
