Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This is a straightforward combination of the negation affix V{ŋŋit}V, and a non-productive affix V{-luaq}V with a rather complicated meaning. This combination means 'Subject hardly Vb', and it is mentioned by Kleinschmidt [9] and Schultz-Lorentzen [10] under the entry for -luarpoĸ, and in the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary [15] under {tluk-}.

Meanings and examples

  • nuinngiluaannarpoq, it is hardly just visible
    [9]

From nuivoq, 'it appears; becomes visible', and V{-(g)innaq}V, 'just'. Kleinschmidt gives a longer translation: 'a bit more, and then it would have become visible; it only lacks a bit to appear from behind that which is hiding it'.

  • takunngiluaannarpara, I hardly just saw it
    [9]

From takuaa, 'he sees it', and V{-(g)innaq}V, 'just'. Again, Kleinschmidt has a longer translation: 'a little (more/further), then I would have seen it'.
