Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This affix is a variant of V{(gi)jaqtuq}V with the same left-sandhi behaviour, and one of the same meanings. There is no explanation in the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary for the source of the extra /aaq/ appearing at the end.
Left sandhi:
This affix seems to be a variant of V{(gi)jaqtuq}V, extended with an unknown morpheme /aaq/. Hence, this affix has the same idiosyncratic sandhi rule as V{(gi)jaqtuq}V. However, briefly, the rule is:
- the affix is additive,
- the segment (gi) is dropped on all vowel stems, but inserted on all consonant stems.
See the entry on V{(gi)jaqtuq}V for details.
Meanings and examples
This affix may be more common than V{(gi)jaqtuq}V when used in this sense, since it is then unambiguous which meaning is meant.
- qanilliartuaarpoq, it is getting closer and closer
[14]
From qanillivoq, 'it is close' (or 'it has come close').
