Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This affix is a variant of V{-laaq}V, 'Subject Vb a little', apparently with no difference in meaning. It also seems to contain the aforementioned morpheme, and some unknown component that gives the initial /a/. The affix is not mentioned in the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary [16], so it is unknown, what this first component is.

The present affix is not mentioned in older dictionaries [9, 11]. It does not appear to be very productive either; normally, the variant V{-laaq}V will be preferred.

Left sandhi:

According to Nielsen [8], this affix will inject /j/, rather than the usual /v/ when required by phonotactics; i.e. following [aa]. For example:

However, this behaviour is not documented in any of the other dictionaries.

Meanings and examples

  • nalliualaarpaa, he is a little pained/plagued [14]

From naalliuppoq, 'he is pained/plagued'. Note: this is a k-stem; old orthography: nâgdliugpoĸ.

  • siorsualaarpoq, (it can be heard that the air) whistles a little [11]

From siorsuppoq, 'it makes a whistling sound' (when something passes by rapidly).
