Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

The meaning of this affix is 'Subject Vb early'. Kleinschmidt [13] notes that the implied meaning sometimes may be 'too early'.

Left sandhi:

The affix is truncative and completely regular. However, note that /j/ is not written in the new orthography when following [i], hence the initial /j/ will not be written in such contexts, which is the explanation for the form -aarpoq.

Meanings and examples

Sometimes the implied meaning may be 'too early'.

  • aallajaarput, they departed early [16]

    From aallarpoq, 'he travels/departs'.

  • makiaarpoq, he got up early [16]

From makippoq, 'he gets up' (from bed). In this case, the stem ends in [i], after the final consonant has been deleted, hence the initial /j/ is not written in the new orthography.

  • iniaarpaa, he finished it early [16]

From inerpaa, 'he finishes it'. After the final /q/ has been deleted from the stem, it ends on [i], which again means that the initial /j/ of the affix is not written in the new orthography.

  • innajaarpoq, he goes to bed early [11]

From innarpoq, 'he goes to bed'.
