Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This affix is formed through a straightforward combination of V{naviiq}V and V{tət}V, where the /i/ in the stem has caused assibilation of /t/ to /s/.
The meaning is also straightforward from the combination: 'Agent
does not let there be a danger that Patient
may Vb', i.e. the Agent
ensures that the Patient
will not Vb, or the Agent
guards the Patient
such that he will not Vb.
This could either be by taking preventive measures, or at least by not doing anything which could lead to the verbal action as a result.
However, Kleinschmidt (1871) notes that this complex meaning may often just be translated as 'Agent
does not let Patient
Vb'.
Right sandhi:
Right sandhi is inherited from the right-most component, V{tət}V. See this for details.
