Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This affix appears to be a combination of V{nqik}V, 'entirely', and some other, unidentified morpheme. It appears to have two slightly different meanings:
- Schultz-Lorentzen translates it as '
Subjectis almost/nearly Vb'ing', thus indicating that theSubjectcould be Vb'ing more. - In Oqaatsit [19], the examples indicate that it should be translated as '
Subjectis absolutely/entirely Vb'ing', thus indicating that theSubjectcould not possibly be Vb'ing more. Thus, this meaning seems to be equivalent to the first component, V{nqik}V. It may be, that the present form is preferred for this meaning to disambiguate the usage from the second meaning of V{nqik}V. Given that Oqaatsit is newer, this meaning is likely the productive one.
In both dictionaries, it seems that there is a preference for using this affix with intransitive endings, so a divalent stem may possibly need to first have its valency reduced by adding a HTR-morpheme, before this affix can be added.
