Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
The meaning of this affix is 'Subject Vb for the first time'.
It appears to be a productive (or, at least, marginally productive) variant of V{qnaq}V.
However, 'for the first time' may more commonly be expressed with the stem pernar-, built from that variant form, and used in the contemporative mood as a modifier to the main verb.
Meanings and examples
Implied: 'and Subject is therefore inexperienced in Vb'ing'.
- nalliuterngaarpoq, he turns 1 year old; he celebrates his 1 year birthday
[19]
From nalliuppoq, 'it is his birthday', thus literally: 'he celebrates birthday for the first time'. Note, this is a t(ə)-stem.
- pivorleerngaarpoq, he has for the first time participated in reciting the 'Christmas Gospel'.
[19]
This is apparently a tradition that children recite this piece (Luke 2:1-14) at Christmas. This specific section is traditionally called Juleevangeliet, 'the Christmas Gospel' in Danish and Greenlandic.
- qajartorngaarpoq, he has sailed in kayak for the first time
[19]
From qajartorpoq, 'he sails in kayak'.
