Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

According to Kleinschmidt V{sa}Vvoĸ) }}, the present affix is a combination of V{sa}V, 'be in a state of', and V{-laaq}V, 'a little'. If that indeed is the case, then it is an irregular combination, with no explanation of why the initial /la/ has disappeared. Alternatively, it could be from a regular combination with V{-aq}V, but this does not seem to fit with the meaning.

Left sandhi:

Left sandhi is inherited from the left-most component, V{sa}V. See this for details.

Meanings and examples

This is a very tentative translation. Often, the meaning seems to just be a variation of the meaning of the unmodified verbal stem.

  • nuisaarpoq, it sticks out a bit (from behind something) [11]

From nuivoq, 'it appears (from behind something)'.

  • avalassaarpoq, he sails out (from land) [12]

Lexicalised, from avalappoq, 'he sails; sails out'. Note, this is a k-stem, avalagpoĸ, and the affix is additive here.

  • ikkarlisaarpoq, it scrapes the bottom (of a vessel) [12]

Lexicalised, from ikkarlippoq, 'it hits a reef'. Note, this is a t-stem, íkardlípoĸ, and the affix is truncative here.

  • majorassaarpoq, it runs up onto the beach (of a boat or kayak) [11]

Lexicalised, from majorappoq, seemingly with the same meaning. note that this is a k-stem, majoragpoĸ, and the affix is additive here.

  • pississaarpoq, he jumps up and down (in the same place) [12]

Lexicalised, from pissippoq, 'he jumps'. Note that this is a k-stem, pigsigpoĸ, and the affix is additive here.
