Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This is a verbalisation of the allative case, but its usage is limited to two cases:
- On the two question words sumut, 'whither?' and kimut 'to whom?', only used in singular.
- On demonstrative adverbials in the allative case, i.e. with the case ending {uŋa}.
Thus, its usage is more limited than the other verbalisation, *{-kaq}V, which, however cannot be used on adverbial demonstratives.
Left sandhi:
There are two different allative morphemes: N{mut} and {uŋa}, and the derivational enclitic joins onto these allative endings in two slightly different ways:
On -mut, it joins directly onto /t/, i.e. N{mut}*{naq}V ⇒ /mutnaq/ ⇒ -munnar, spelt -mungnar in the old orthography. Note that the old orthography spelling suggests that it is actually a duplication of the allative case endings, i.e. with the adverbial allative morpheme {uŋ} being added on top of the normal allative marker {mut}. However, in the new orthography, this detail is not visible.
On the adverbial allative morpheme {uŋa}, the derivational enclitic joins onto /uŋ/, without the final /a/, i.e. {uŋa}*{naq}V ⇒ /uŋnaq/ ⇒ -unnar, spelt -ungnar in the old orthography.
The issue with the adverbial allative morpheme {uŋa} is likely due to it in fact consisting of two different morphemes: a pure prepositional morpheme {uŋ}, and a demonstrative morpheme {a}, that also appears in the other demonstrative case endings. Thus, another way to view it is, that the derivational enclitic joins onto the pure, prepositional morpheme, i.e. without the demonstrative {a}.
