Form and usage:

According to Kleinschmidt [9], the meaning of this affix is something like 'is uncommonly full of N', or 'there is/are uncommonly much/many N on it'. The meaning is thus avalent, and it is used in an exclamatory sense, with only 3sg endings where the person marker does not seem to refer to anything explicit. It may also be used without a verbal ending at all, in an entirely exclamatory sense.

In newer dictionaries such as Oqaatsit [14], it appears to be used synonymously with N{-(q)gasak}V, which also seems to be one of its constituents; i.e.:

Meanings and examples

Or 'how filled with N it is!', in an exclamatory sense. The affix is avalent, and thus only used with 3sg endings with no explicit subject specification.

  • inugasaarpoq, see how many people there are! [11]
  • orsorasaarpoq, see how filled/covered in blubber it is! [11]

    E.g. when pointing towards a rock where many seals had recently been butchered.

  • uiluigasaaq, absolutely filled with oysters! [11]

    From uiloq and N{-vik}N. Here, the affix is used in an entirely exclamatory sense without any verbal ending.
