Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

This is not originally an enclitic, but rather an affix, N{(q)viaq}N, which is sometimes added onto particles, or even onto endings of complete words, thus behaving like an enclitic. The meaning is the same as the nominal form: 'exactly'.

Left sandhi:

Note that, unlike the nominal affix, this enclitic seems to always prefer to have /q/ as its initial consonant. Thus, it is here recorded as truncative.

Meanings and examples

  • taannarpiaq, exactly that one [9]

    From taanna, 'that one'.

  • taakkorpiaat, exactly those [9]

From taakku, 'those'. Note: It is unclear why the /aa/ is long here; i.e whether this is a plural form, or a plural possessed form.

  • taamanerpiaq, exactly then; exactly at that time (in the past) [9]

From taamani, 'then (in the past)'.

  • massakkorpiaq, right now; exactly now [14]

From massakkut, 'now', seemingly deleting the final consonant of the ending.

  • uangarpiaq, exactly I/me [11]

From uanga, the 1sg personal pronoun.

  • uagorpiaq, exactly we/us [11]

From uagut, the 1pl personal pronoun, with deletion of the final consonant.

  • tassanerpiaq, exactly there [11]

    From tassani, 'there'.

  • ulluni taakkunanerpiaq, exactly in those days [11]

Compare ulluni taakkunani, 'in those days'.

  • uatsinnorpiaq, exactly to us [11]

From uatsinnut, the 1pl personal pronoun in the allative case, with deletion of the final consonant.

  • namminerpiaq, in person; the self-same [11]

From nammineq, 'self' (e.g. as in 'self-made'), so literally: 'exactly the self'.
