Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This affix is a so-called 'half-transitivising' morpheme, abbreviated HTR, which is used to give divalent, patient-preserving stems intransitive form, without changing the meaning of the stem. The concept of HTR-morphemes and their usage is further described on this page: Half-transitive affixes.
Stems using the present HTR-morpheme are in particular:
- aallerpoq from aavaa, 'he fetches it', cf. {aə}V.
- ujarlerpoq from ujarpaa, 'he searches for it', cf. {ujaq}V.
Note that in Oqaatsit [CBBJRPIKJR97], the HTR-form of ujarpaa is given as ujaasivoq, whereas ujarlerpoq is recorded as a separate entry, but with the same meaning as the HTR-form of ujarpaa. However, in older dictionaries such as Schultz-Lorentzen [CWSL58], the HTR-form is given as ujarlerpoq, whereas ujaasivoq (spelt ujáusivoĸ in the old orthography) in fact is a variant of the HTR-form of a different stem, namely ujaappaa (spelt ujáupâ) besides the regular/expected HTR-form of this stem, i.e. ujaassivoq, ujáussivoĸ. Thus, it seems that current HTR-form of ujarpaa in fact is an irregularly formed HTR-form of a different stem.
Right sandhi:
According to Ordbogeeraq [JP67], the HTR-stems formed with this affix have assibilation of a following /t/ by the true /i/ in the stem.
