Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
This is a lexicalised variant of V{-(cc)ut(ə)}V, following vowel- and t-stems, according to the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary [MFSJLK10]. However, nowadays it appears to be used productively as an alternative to V{-(cc)ut(ə)}V in combinations where phonotactics otherwise would have required a /j/ to be inserted, i.e. following [aa]. There may also be a relation to the nominalising affix V{ccutə}N in terms of usage. See the entry for V{-(cc)ut(ə)}V for more usage examples and a description of the (regular) right-sandhi of t(ə)-stems.
Right sandhi:
Additive affixes and endings attach to /t/, but truncative affixes and endings attach to /ə/. See the variant V{-(cc)ut(ə)}V for a longer description of the general behaviour of t(ə)-stems.
Notable forms:
-
HTR-form:
V{ccut(ə)}V + V{ði}V ⇒ /ccucci/
-
Passive participle:
V{ccut(ə)}V + V{-ðaq}N ⇒ /ccuccaq/
Meanings and examples
The meanings are the same as for the variant V{-(cc)ut(ə)}V, so see this for further examples.
- naammassissuppaa, he completes it for him
From naammassivaa, 'he completes it'. This is a lexicalised word, illustrating how the form V{ccut(ə)}V was used on vowel stems. Today, ordinary V{-(cc)ut(ə)}V would probably be preferred in this context.
