The meaning of this base is 'coat' (or possibly also 'jacket'). It is a borrowed word, from Danish kavaj (which is an old word for a type of coat).

Notes on inflection:

The stem inflects like an ordinary weak q-stem with p-declension. According to Ordbogeeraq [JP67], it does not inflect with gemination, despite having a single, voiced fricative /j/ as its third-to-last sound. This is presumably because the word is borrowed.
