Description and behaviour

Form and usage:

The meaning of this stem is 'mountain', regardless of its size. According to Kleinschmidt [SK71], it can be further graduated with affixes, e.g. N{(q)cuaq}N and N{ŋŋuaq}N to express qaqqarsuaq, 'big mountain', qaqqannguaq, 'small mountain/hill', and so on.

According to the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary, it historically derives from {qaðə}, i.e. {qaəq}N, 'top/surface of Possessor', and then they suggest the second component is N{-qaq}V. However, as this combination is historical, and depends on phonemes that have been dropped in the modern-day forms, we do not record it as a combination here.

Inflection

Declension pattern:

Stem type: Weak q-stem
Declension type: p-declined
Declension sandhi: Default/none

Notes on declension:

The stem inflects as a weak q-stem with p-declension. As this is entirely regular, we do not give an inflection table here.
