Description and behaviour
Form and usage:
According to Kleinschmidt [SK71], this stem denotes 'a grove/furrow' carved into some material such as wood, bone, metal etc.
According to the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary, the origin of this stem is {qipuk-}, 'to scratch', and possibly influenced by {qipə-}, 'to twist', hence we record the form here as /qipəruq/, since it is otherwise unclear how the /u/ should come to have an [i] sound. However, this is just guesswork; it is not clear from that dictionary whether the second vowel in fact is /i/ or /ə/. Also, the final part /ruq/ is unexplained.
Schultz-Lorentzen [CWSL58] also mentions a variant form of this stem, qipeqqoq, with the same meaning, although that form is not listed in the newer Oqaatsit [CBBJRPIKJR97] dictionary.
Lastly, note also the related stem {qipuraq}N, which specifically denotes 'a furrow in the belly of a whale'; apparently from the same root, according to the Comparative Eskimo Dictionary [MFSJLK10]. This, again, seems related to qipoqqaq, 'humpback whale'.
